Office of Police Complaints Announces its 2014 Internship Program

(Washington, DC)  – The District of Columbia’s Office of Police Complaints (OPC) is currently seeking applicants for its 2014 internship programs.  Positions are available in three areas:  investigations, law, and public affairs.

Students selected to participate will gain valuable training and practical experience in the field of police oversight and law enforcement.

Police Complaints Board Recommends Steps to Address MPD Enforcement of the District’s Window Tint Law and Allegations of Racial Profiling

(Washington, DC)  – The District of Columbia’s Police Complaints Board (PCB), the governing body of the Office of Police Complaints (OPC), today submitted a report and set of recommendations to Mayor Vincent C. Gray, the Council of the District of Columbia, and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Cathy L. Lanier proposing a review of the city’s vehicle window tint law in order to address concerns about how it is enforced and the potential for biased policing.

Office of Police Complaints Hosts Delegation from Bahrain

Office of Police Complaints Executive Director Receives Highest Police Oversight Award

(Washington, D.C.)  – The executive director of the District of Columbia’s Office of Police Complaints (OPC), Philip K. Eure, yesterday received the 2013 Flame Award from the National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement (NACOLE) during the association’s 19th Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The award is NACOLE’s highest honor.

Police Complaints Board Releases Follow-Up Report on MPD Enforcement of the District’s Biking Laws and Bicycle Safety

(Washington, DC) – Cycling is growing in popularity in the District.  Three percent of city residents biked to work in 2010 and there were 56 miles of designated bike lanes as of 2012.  As the number of bicyclists increase in the District of Columbia, the number of bike crashes has also grown.  According to the District Department of Transportation, District of Columbia Bike Program Fact Sheet, there were 264 reported bike crashes in 2006 and 435 reported in 2012.

Office of Police Complaints Welcomes 2013 Summer Interns and Law Clerks

(Washington, DC) – The Office of Police Complaints (OPC) recently welcomed its 2013 class of summer interns and law clerks.  

Since the agency’s inception, 123 college and law students have participated in OPC’s internship program.  Those selected gain practical experience in either investigations, public affairs, or the legal aspects of police accountability.  

Office of Police Complaints Welcomes Scholar from Germany

(Washington, DC) The District of Columbia’s Office of Police Complaints (OPC) recently hosted Dr. Hartmut Aden, a professor of law and public administration at the Berlin School of Economics and Law.

Dr. Aden met with OPC’s executive director, Philip K. Eure, on June 10, 2013.  Mr. Eure provided an overview of OPC’s complaint process and information about how the agency’s policy recommendations can achieve police reform.

Gray, the Council of the District of Columbia, and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Cathy L. Lanier proposing ways to address unconstitutional entries and searches of private homes made by some MPD police officers.
