(Washington, DC) – The Office of Police Complaints (OPC) is currently seeking applicants for its 2013 Investigative, Public Affairs, and Legal internship programs. 

The agency has attracted many outstanding students from schools in the Washington, DC, area and beyond for its programs.  Those selected to participate will gain valuable exposure to the fields of police accountability and law enforcement.

College or graduate students selected for OPC’s investigative internship program work with experienced investigators to collect and analyze evidence, draft interview questions, and take witness statements.  Investigative interns also participate in the agency’s community outreach activities.

OPC’s law school interns conduct legal and factual research to support the investigative and administrative functions of the office, write legal memoranda, and draft proposals for police reforms.  In addition, law clerks work with advocacy groups and local and federal agencies on issues affecting police accountability.

Public affairs interns are assigned to draft news releases and reports, participate in outreach events, respond to information requests from the public, and develop content for the agency’s website and Facebook page. 

Applicants for OPC’s internships should have strong research, writing, and interpersonal skills, and be able to work with diverse populations.  Fall and spring internships are unpaid, but can be done for academic credit in conjunction with coursework at the intern’s school.  There is a stipend paid for summer internships.
