(Washington, DC) – The Office of Police Complaints (OPC) and its governing body, the Police Complaints Board today released its Fiscal Year 2023 Mid-Year Report. This report includes data on complaints investigated by OPC in the first half of FY23.

From October 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, OPC received 425 complaints and investigated 338 complaints reflecting a 37% increase from FY22.  Additionally, for the first half of FY23, there was a 26% increase in new investigations, 24% increase in formal complaints filed and 9% increase in contacts received by the public from FY22. Also, 81% of OPC cases had body-worn camera (BWC) footage with 43% of those cases including some form of BWC non-compliance.

OPC also published two recommendations in the first half of FY23 to help update and improve the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) policies and procedures. The Presidential Executive Order 14074 policy recommendation provided MPD with ways to improve or accelerate its adherence to the best practices in the executive order. OPC’s most recent recommendation reviewed and examined the status of policy reports and recommendations made in FY21 by OPC to MPD.
